Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is meant to help individuals regulate their emotional experience and react in ways that are more advantageous for themselves. Research has shown DBT to be effective for numerous groups of individuals, including those with borderline personality disorder, who self-harm, and individuals with substance abuse disorders, depression, eating disorder and other problems of emotional imbalance and living. The primary “dialectic” (integration of opposites) within DBT is between the seemingly opposite strategies of acceptance and change. Our DBT therapists accept clients as they are while also acknowledging that they need to change in order to reach their goals.

This is a 16-week skills-oriented group for adults ages 25-40. We will teach and practice the following four components of DBT to help you tolerate and accept your feelings, and practice ways to change and enhance your life.

  • Mindfulness: Balancing emotions and thoughts.
  • Distress Tolerance: Attending to the present to get through difficulties.
  • Emotion Regulation: Labeling emotions and increase positive emotions.
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness: Effectively identifying needs/wants and communication them in order to maintain and keep relationships.

Group therapy, individual therapy and phone coaching are essential components of DBT. Group participants are required to be in individual therapy while participating in the group.
